Remington 700 Tactical Stocks For Varminting
Remington’s Model 700 has a well deserved place as the United States’ favourite bolt action hunting rifle. Its simplicity of construction, tremendous strength, ease of upgrade and inherent accuracy have seen its adoption by police and armed forces the World over. It is the current sniper rifle of the US Army (M24 and XM2010), USMC (M40) and US Navy SEALs (Mk 13 Mod 5). The enduring popularity of the Remington 700 has made it the first choice of aftermarket parts and clone manufacturers.
Only the AR15 is arguably more upgradeable than the Model 700. An unfortunate facet of this is the cheap, throwaway plastic stocks that the manufacturer persists in fitting to keep the price of their entry level models down. A new or tuned trigger should be your first priority; the next best thing you can do for the accuracy of your rifle is to bed it in a decent laminated or synthetic stock. Torquing your rifle down onto a modern synthetic stock with an aluminium bedding block or chassis is the most reliable and effective bedding for a rifle used in the great outdoors. A stock of this kind will set you back at least $300, but there is no point in investing a fortune in an expensive scope or hunting guide if you don’t have a rifle that will hold its zero in the conditions you will encounter.
Bell and Carlson have built up a fine reputation for their comprehensive range of rugged, dependable and utterly rigid stocks. The Bell and Carlson system involves taking an aluminium pillar bedding block and hand layering a variety of composite materials including graphite, aramid fibers, fiberglass and epoxy gel coats and laminating resins; adding polyurethane reinforcement with milled fiberglass. This results in an utterly rigid but very lightweight ( 2.5 lb.) construction that is profoundly different from the cheap, non free-floating stocks the factory sells with its baseline models. The Bell and Carlson Light Tactical stock is typical of their range and offers a good choice for right handed short action M700s used in a varmint or predator control role. The Light Tactical Stock has a cut out underneath the rear of the stock to allow the left hand to cradle the rifle for greater control. ‘Glass’ bedding this rifle is a purely cosmetic option.
H-S Precision, manufacturers of the stock used by the US Army for their M24 sniper rifle, likewise take an machined aluminium bedding block and bond it to fiberglass reinforced structural polyurethane foam. This aligns the action perfectly and supports it rigidly. As with the B&C Light Tactical Stock, H-S hand laminate using Kevlar and fiberglass cloth together with uni-directional carbon fiber particles to create a perfectly stiff stock only 2 lb. oz. in weight. These stocks are impervious to temperature and humidity. H-S protect their stocks with a baked on polyurethane finish that is non reflective and textured for a firm hold in wet conditions. H-S precision’s PST series stock was selected as the Remington 700 Police stock and is available in floorplate and detachable magazine models in a choice of black or desert tan color.
Both of these stocks have relatively conventional lines and are light enough not to compromise the mobility of the rifle. However, when they created their chassis system for a mid 1980s British Army sniper rifle contest, Accuracy International literally threw the book away when it came to aesthetics, resulting in an incredibly rugged and accurate weapon system. They wanted the most solid possible bond between the action and chassis and went the whole way, gluing it permanently with incredibly strong epoxy resin to make it a single unit. The result was an insanely accurate rifle that very few civilian shooters could afford. Despite their rifles soon becoming standard issue to the British, German, Belgian, Dutch, Australian and Swedish forces, AI realised that it needed to get into the US civil market. To make an affordable rifle they adapted their chassis system to take the Remington 700 in its short and long action guises.
AI’s ‘civilian’ stock, the Accuracy International Chassis System, is milled from a single billet of aerospace quality aluminium onto which the glass reinforced polymer panels are bolted. The action is aligned perfectly by the V-shaped bedding block, torqued down with the two bolts supplied with the kit. The slab sided shape is surprisingly easy to carry when slung and AI offer an ingenious twin shoulder harness sling to accomplish this. Mounting points are included for AI and Harris bipods. A thumbhole grip accommodates all sizes of hands with or without gloves and an adjustable cheekpiece caters for different heights of day and night vision sight. Bolt on spacers are used to adjust length of pull. All versions take AI’s legendary detachable box magazines, the short action 5 and 10 round double stack mags and the long action .300 Winchester a 5 shot single stack unit. The rifles are available in Stage 1.5 (fixed) and Stage 2.0 (folding versions), each of which is available in long and short action format and with panels in black, greed or dark earth. The US Navy adopted the AICS for its Mk 13 Mod 5 Sniper Weapon System – the price of that prestige is 5 lb. 11 oz. and $1100 US dollars as of January 2010.
