Did Inglourious Basterds strike you as surprisingly mature?
Okay I really think Quentin might’ve shown as an artist he can make a mature movie that exceeds simple minded violence, flash, crazy situations, and hipster references, which was ironic because I thought this movie was going to be about one thing and one thing only…. killing nazis. But it’s the subtlety that really hits this one out of the park. I mean every character’s morality is somewhat ambiguous by the end of the movie. Aldo Raine and the Basterds are obviously supposed to come across as a sort of cartoon amongst all the other multifaceted evolving personas of Hans Landa, Fredrick Zoller and Shosanna. It certainly wasn’t a jewish revenge flick. At it’s core, as many have already pointed out, it’s about taking you for a ride to make you realize all the meaningless hatred that dwells inside of you. The very fact that you came to see a movie about killing Nazi’s says something about you.
Yeah, the movie has depth more than his other works. This just proves he is growing as a writer. He himself has said it’s his best work. I liked is for all the reasons you have pointed out. It makes you believe it will be a certain kind of movie then by the end you feel that you have seen all of what humanity has to offer. It’s a well rounded flick and in my opinion it should win best picture of the year. The Hurt Locker is overrated and Avatar has $$$ and buzz but it will win for best visual effects. The sleeper hit of the year was Inglourious Basterds.
