A Look Back At The Philadelphia Flyers
In the mid 1960s it became known that the NHL was looking to expand the number of teams from six. The league was looking to take a preemptive strike against any rival league thinking of becoming the NHL’s competitor. As such, six new teams were introduced into the league. One of those teams was the Philadelphia flyers; and they would go on to be one of hockey’s, if not all sports’, most successful expansion franchises. With this in mind, let’s delve into some history of the Flyers.
All six of the new teams were placed into the same division. When that first season ended, the Flyers found themselves number one of the heap even though they finished the season with a losing record. Their first playoff experience was not a very good one. The St. Louis Blues beat them in seven games, sending them packing and on their way back home.
Things did not improve. During the 1969-1970 season the team was only able to come up with seventeen victories and did not make the playoffs. One thing was introduced during that rough season that is still in effect today. The owner of the team began playing “God Bless America” over the arena speakers rather than the National Anthem before every game. It was sung by Kate Smith, and it is a tradition that can still be heard today.
It was during the early seventies that the Flyers were dubbed the “Broad Street Bullies”. The team played its games at the Spectrum which was located on Broad Street. Moreover, they played a physical, if not a brawling style of hockey. So it is not surprising the moniker stuck.
Perhaps the nickname proved inspirational as the playoff drought did not last long. In 1974 the Flyer team prevailed over the Bobby Orr led Boston Bruins, as they won the series in six games. In but seven short years an NHL expansion club had won hockey’s most cherished prize, the Stanley Cup.
The 1974 championship run proved not to be a fluke. One year later the Bullies found themselves in the thick of the Cup chase again. After a brutal and contentious seven game semi-final series against the New York Rangers, they emerged victorious. The next foe was the Buffalo Sabres. It resulted in Philadelphia earning hockey’s top prize. They defeated the Sabres four games to two.
Many legendary players have played for Flyer teams. Perhaps the best known is Bobby Clarke. This Hall of Fame player began in 1969 and won three MVP awards. A lot of experts rank Clarke in the top 100 all time players.
The Flyers have ultimately evolved in one of the league’s most consistently successful franchises. Year after year they always seem to find themselves in the thick of the playoff race. So don’t be surprised if you look at the standings in the newspaper tomorrow and find them at or near the top.
