City Detective
Is it better to be a state detective or a city detective? which will be better for college?
I live in an urban city and I’ve always wanted to be a detective. Currently I am serving in the United States Military and am about to get out soon. I will be 21, and dismissed with an honorable discharge. It is my goal to attend college full time but i need to be able to support myself, and it’s my long term goal to become a detective. would police agencies allow me to serve so i could still work full time and be working towards my goal, while attending college full time? also, i know state and city departments both have detectives, how do they defer? which force would be better to join?
Detective is a rank, thus you have to start off in uniform in radio patrol. Most large progressive agencies now require at least 60 hours of college to even be hired. You need to review the practices of the agencies you are interested in. Some support their personnel returning to college and will pay part or all of your tuition. Some will split you days off, or put you on a permanent shift, etc. to make college more accessible for you.
Once you do the required amount of time in uniform (3 to 5 years on average) you will be eligible for promotion to Detective and on large departments will be required to take a competitive promotional exam. If promoted your work history and proven abilities will effect your initial assignment. You will sometimes have to wait for opening and work your way into more coveted positions in Homicide or Narcotics, unless you were an exemplary officer.
When deciding on state or local, look at the one with the largest and best paid Detective Division. This will determine you chances of promotion. Be aware that state police are usually underpaid when compared to large cities. Good luck.
