From Basel To Germany’s Capital By Sleeper Train
2 months back the great ash cloud over Europe forced me to quite radically change some of my travel plans “fortuitously for the better. I was in Zurich for a couple of days for business. As it occurred I had caught one of the last flights into Zurich Airport before the airspace was closed down. I wasn't too anxious since it appeared that there are several far less pleasant towns to stay in. And I discovered the wonderful Hotel Adler. But after an agreeable few days with my Air Berlin not in a position to give me any idea when flights would resume I decided that if I waited for an aircraft I'd finish up waiting for weeks. I looked into hiring a automobile but they were already all scheduled out so I assumed I’d try the train.
Now there are loads of fast train services between Zurich and Berlin that take about half a day and I am sure would be really pleasing. But I made a decision that for a change I would try the night train (or Town Nightline, as it is called by Deutsche Bahn, the German railway company). We received onto the train at about 7 pm or so and as we were travelling as a family with our two youngsters were given a 6 sleeper coach for the 4 of us. This was economy class so there were not any frills. I looked at the 1st class sleeper coaches and they looked really good.
But I had no grouses about our coach. The beds were smartly made, it was perfectly clean and the employees were friendly. After a quick supper in the dining car we tucked the boys into bed and they passed out. Our 3-year-old was in a condition of convincing rapture as he loves trains and this was, for him, the most stimulating way to go. I'm sure most children would love the night train. The movement rocked them both to sleep pretty swiftly and my better half and I also had great sleeps.
It was also an extraordinarily gorgeous trip as we travelled first to Basel along the river and thru the mountains before crossing over into Germany and going on our way. The train travels relatively slowly and also pulls into a siding for a little while to offer you more time to sleep. That way they time your arrival so that you get in at 7 a.m. In the morning. After doing the trip once I am keen to do it again. For business journeys between Berlin and places like Munich, Zurich or even Paris it appears for more reasonable to get onto a night train, have a good nights sleep and arrive refreshed not having to wake up at 4:30 or 5 in the morning to catch the 1st flight.
The trip was spoiled by one unlucky incident. A winter coat was stolen from our compartment while we were out for supper. But it's not possible to fasten them from the outside (top class may be different) and although our bags were locked we did not think a coat would be nicked.
The second lesson was that if you would like a table in the dining automobile you should book ahead. We were lucky to get one as some people didn't arrive. But apart from that we would be in real difficulty as all of the tables were reserved.
Apart from those grumbles, it is hard to think of a more civilized way to go than by old style train.
