Do Star Trek communicators have lag?
Think about it – you slap your communicator and start the communication, “Commander Riker to Jordie”. The computer could have no idea that you are talking to Jordie until after you’ve finished the sentence. But Jordie responds in real time. I realize this is a suspension of disbelief issue, but hasn’t anyone thought about this before?
I know what you’re saying. I thought the same thing about the little speakers around the Enterprise as well in the Original Series. Like, when Captain Kirk would just go over and hit the little button and could talk to Scotty in Engineering or Spock on the Bridge, or Bones in sick bay. All using the same button. I actually thought about it for a long time in the shower once, and here’s what i came up with…
1. The communicators could be linked to certain receivers on-board and so when say, Captain Kirk calls the Enterprise, the message would be received in specific parts of the ship. Spock may be the only person who picks up because he’s 1st officer and on the bridge. But, if Captain Kirk asked for Scotty, then Scotty would hear the message and answer.
2. Communicators could be like walkie talkies, only more complicated. At my work, we have walkies that are set to a specific channel, and everyone on that channel can hear anything coming and going through it. Maybe certain people are set to a specific channel or frequency on the communicators (say Jordie, Picard, and Riker are all working on something, then they would all be on the same frequency…but everyone else would be on a different one so they wouldn’t hear what was going on).
That’s the only logical things I could come up with, but then again…it’s just a tv show so they can do whatever they want. It would take pointless less-than-interesting time to watch Captain Kirk sit their and dial his communicator and wait for the other person to pick up… It’s so much faster and cooler to watch when he does his epic communicator flip-open and says “Kirk to Enterprise” and get’s an instant answer.
