Roam Like A Dinosaur In The Echo Caverns In Pennsylvania
While a trip to Hershey, Pennsylvania may be filled with chocolaty treats from the production factory, various restaurants and many sweets shops around the quaint city; it can also be filled with outdoor and underground explorations. Embedded in the history of the indigenous Susquehannock Indians, these caverns provided safety from the early to mid 1600s. Following their abandonment by indigenous peoples, French fur trappers found the area in the late 1600s and laid claim to its borders. As fur stocks depleted, they left and an old hermit took over the cave for 19 years. When they next became empty, they were made available for ordinary folks to enjoy. And thankfully it has remained that way; a public attraction to satisfy the interests of many.
When you enter the park, the caricature of a Susquehannock Indian, “Chief Kumsee,” greets you with his feather headdress and directs you to the ticket station. A gift shop sells tickets to the cavern tours. When you have safely acquired your tickets, you can entertain yourself and the kids with sideline activities while you wait. There is a station where you’ll be able to look for gemstones, along with a small petting zoo to certainly occupy you while you wait for your turn to tour.
The caves are 440 million years old and full of twists, turns stalactites and stalagmites. You’ll spend 45 minutes exploring the caverns as the guide recounts the histories of all the areas. You’ll see an Indian Ballroom, a tunnel in pitch darkness and a Wedding Chapel, which is a narrow cavern with grand, glistening formations which remarkably similar to a wedding cake. Approximately 40 weddings have taken place at this spot.
As your excursion winds up, you’ll head back to the grand opening through which you entered. It’s notable for its majesty, not only because of its geological formations that are incredible, but because it’s some of the oldest ground on the earth.
