There have been tie-in movie video games pretty much as long as there have been methods to play video games. While a selection of them may have been impressive, most of them have been sadly lacklustre in nigh on every way that made the feature films they were based around great. At the moment, thankfully there is a superb selection of movie video games out to get into- a few of which might well be better than the films themselves!
First up there’s the tie-in movie video game based on X-Men Origins: Wolverine. This exciting game is thankfully a lot better than the Wolverine film itself! Created by Raven Software, the game features a rather different plot to the hit film, but it does have Hugh Jackman’s voice and likeness. The game features all of Wolverine’s abilities, which are put to use in a very nice way- in particular his healing power.
As far as Marvel video games go, the X-Men Origins: Wolverine movie video game is very violent, as you will notice from the battlefield strewn with decimated cadavers and other lovely things. Well, the Wolverine character certainly has claws. Here you can make him use them to their full lethal effect.
Next there is the new video game based on Terminator Salvation, the fourth film in the apocalyptic cyborg sci-fi action film series. Where both Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines and its movie video game version were excruciatingly bad, this looks to be going in tandem with the bold new direction of the new film and is awesome to look at and play. Here’s a notable example of how movie video games are getting better a huge amount lately.
Now thanks to two-player co-operative gameplay, the Terminator series is catching up with other video games such as the iconic Gears of War franchise, allowing for some fun split-screen action to be had. Couple this with the ingeniously rendered distopian future world that the movie video game happens in, which you can use to your full advantage during the video game, and you have one compelling prospect for the Sony Playstation 3 and Xbox 360.
The eagerly awaited Ghostbusters movie video game is something that is quite rightfully causing a big stir. With news that Ghostbusters 3 is finally going to be made, 20 years after Ghostbusters 2 arrived, now is the perfect time to remind yourself of the classic Ghostbusters characters and scenes. Let’s face it, the 1st movie is a genuine classic in every sense of the term, and finally there is a movie video game that does it the justice it deserves.
The story behind the new Ghostbusters video game was written by Harold Ramis and Dan Ackroyd, the writers (and stars) of the first two Ghostbusters feature films, so the new video game may even be canon to a certain extent. The classic original four Ghostbusters movie characters have been back as fantastic digital representations of the actors, and the whole game looks brilliant. All of your character’s vital stats are given on your Proton pack, giving this movie video game a similar feel to Dead Space. With all of the classic creatures showing up in the game, fans will be enthralled when they snap it up for their DS, PS3, PC, Xbox 360 or Wii.
After so many lackluster movie video game tie-ins, it seems to be that the latest games that are hitting the shelves are being developed with much more respect for the original material and also what fans demand out of a movie video game based on their favourite films. These are the best three movie video games around right now, and hopefully they can help you unleash a great new level of enjoyment of your favourite films.
