Visit The Fundy Bay
The Bay of Fundy is shared by the Canadian Provinces of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick and is home to the highest tides in the world. Every single day a 100 billion tonnes of seawater flows in and out enabling visitors to walk on the seas floor at low tide.
The Bay is rich in marine life including great whales, porpoises, dolphins, seals and seabirds. There are numerous attractions across the region showing the Bay of Fundy’s smashing geology and ecology. The Fundy seascape includes national and provincial parks, coastal hiking trails, natural history museums, lighthouses and tidal harbours. The history and culture of Fundy are found at interpretation centres, historical sites, museums, horticultural gardens, and craft studios throughout the region.
Plenty of the accommodations in the area celebrate the Bay’s rich architectural heritage, from rustic country inns, historic bed and breakfasts, coastal cottages and full service hotels.
Celebrate the earths’ most dramatic and diverse tidal environment and ride a zodiac out on the tide as rises up to 50 feet. Experience the joys of nature as 100-billion tons of salt-water slowly fill the Bay of Fundy. It’s an experience you will not soon forget and cannot witness anywhere else in the world.
Along the Bay check out the GlooscapTrail. According to Mi’kmaq legend, Glooscap was a giant man who lived on the high cliffs of Cape Blomidon, overlooking the Bay. As legend goes, Glooscap created the Five Islands in the Minas Basin. He threw giant fistfuls of mud at a beaver who had built a huge dam and flooded his garden. The mud bust the beaver’s dam and permitted the water to pour in, forming the islands and making the Bay of Fundy tides.
Witness the mineral and fossil-laden cliffs surrounding the basin. Glooscap is an area of discovery, where stories of pirate’s treasure and dinosaurs abound. The natural beauty will dazzle you, and you can search the coastline for fossils thousands of years old.
On the New Brunswick side explore the Hopewell Rocks where you can explore the beach with its flowerpot shaped rock formations having curious names such as ‘Mother-in-Law ‘, ‘ET ‘ and ‘Lover’s Arch’. Then as the tide comes in witness the highest tides in the world twice a day. At high tide you can paddle a canoe around the same sandstone rocks you walked around on the beach earlier. Hear the Mi’kmaq myths about these unique and incredible tides.
In July and August witness thousands of migrating shorebirds dance around the sky. The Bay of Fundy is really a noteworthy place in nature. There’s much to see that is completely different in both the provinces.
