Area word problem … HELP!?
Figure (a) shows a vacant lot with a 130-ft frontage L in a development. To estimate its area, we introduce a coordinate system so that the x-axis coincides with the edge of the straight road forming the lower boundary of the property, as shown in Figure (b). Then, thinking of the upper boundary of the property as the graph of a continuous function f over the interval [0, 130], we see that the problem is mathematically equivalent to that of finding the area under the graph of f on [0, 130]. To estimate the area of the lot using a Riemann sum, we divide the interval [0, 130] into five equal subintervals of length 26 ft. Then, using surveyor’s equipment, we measure the distance from the midpoint of each of these subintervals to the upper boundary of the property. These measurements give the values of f(x) at x = 13, 39, 65, 91, and 117. What is the approximate area of the lot?

One must have experience in rousing men to action and of ruling them in order to obtain a sound judg vi INTRODUCTION ment on past events, otherwise it is impossible to believehistorians who must try to make an unprejudiced analysis of facts and so arrive at unbiased conclusions. In their view, gods and demons do not exist, not even demi-gods nor demi-demons. For them, men are always of flesh and blood and are endowed with minds which are very liable to become overexcited or rudely deceived, whether in the doing of good or evil unfortunately flesh is weak, the mind is impression able, and for that reason likely to be led astray. Men have often been faced by critical problems which would upset the equilibrium of even the most balanced minds. I am not sure that even a Richelieu would have been able to remain unbiased in facing them. Nearly all those who have passed through times of political strife have lost their sense of perspective.
