The Evolution Of Laser Printers Similar To The HP Color LaserJet 2840 Printer
The explosion of capability from the development of information systems created a tremendous growth in written communication. Most of the media hype and accolades are reserved for the arguably complex and intriguing computer systems, but without their compatriot printers, the computer would be only half as valuable as it has become. Devices like the HP Color LaserJet 2840 printer and Q3963a magenta toner have become as invaluable as the wristwatch for everyday use, at home as well as in business.
The invention of the typewriter, the predecessor to the printer, was a revolution for the communication industry, as well as for all written communication. No longer was penmanship a critical need for success, the typewriter leveled the field and increased the speed and efficiency with which one could communicate in written form. The typewriter reigned as king of print for all forms of communication from businesses to news to entertainment for decades. Naturally it had its drawbacks, correction of errors was at first simple; start over. This was not very efficient for businesses and led to many more errors in print than we would tolerate now.
In the ever increasing demand for speed, quality, and efficiency, the printer has undergone several rounds of increasingly complex technological advance. The earliest printers were created as a software update to the typewriter. These machines allowed at first several lines and later whole pages of type to appear on a small screen for review and correction before sending them to be automatically typed. This was more efficient since an error could be caught before printing, but it still did not really push efficiency, as most people using them could type near the speed of light, so waiting for the typed words to print actually slowed down the document in some ways.
The development of the computer allowed for full document preparation, and made the printer an indispensable part of the communication world. While e-mail has allowed for the transmission of thought from individual to individual, the printer remains the sole means of producing the still necessary hard copies of our business and personal worlds. With full stand alone printers, and with the ability to print in the background, the information system had finally overcome the additional time needed to produce a document that the typewriter saved. Yet the original printing devices were primitive by the standards we have today, and nine pin printouts still looked crude compared with professionally typeset printing, which was prohibitively expensive for most businesses and residential applications.
Still, there were drawbacks, despite the speed of printers, it actually took longer than the old typewriters because the writer spent time typing and proofreading, and then one had to wait for the printer to make a final document. In addition, there were all the usual difficulties with the automated handling of paper; jams, smeared ink and even tears. Alignment was a fairly tricky proposition with early printers as well.
A new type of printer solved many of the impact printer’s problems; the inkjet and laser printers were significant improvements. The printer at this point crossed over from written correspondence to image production. It was now possible to get smooth printed characters and numbers, as well as every variety of images. Initially the print quality still lacked due to the easily smudged final document, but it was far better than the impact printer and as good as the typewriter for professionally produced documentation.
As progress continues, laser printers became faster and faster. At the same time, software programs became even more sophisticated. Spell checking was now standard, and the introduction of a thesaurus and grammar checking features a computer processing the dominant means of composing written communication. The typewriter quietly departed the scene, rarely found in homes or businesses anymore.
The final feature that has made the laser and ink jet printers invaluable was the introduction of color. Now professional brochures, documents, books and magazines could be produced in the home for a much more reasonable price than sending them out for professional typesetting and production. Mass production is still difficult, but not impossible for home use, these industrial size machines are a little pricier than usual printers, and the ink refills can be expensive.
