Authority Sites Versus Mini Sites – The Debate Continues
You are the only person in a position to determine if an authority site or minisite is most appropriate for you and the market you are involved with. We also urge you to avoid making sweeping generalizations regarding each type of site. You are free to think the way you want, naturally, and some people have their minds made up already. But it can be to your advantage to openly look at both sides of this debate. It can be profitable to keep your mind open, as it allows you to consider more possibilities. The following comparison of mini sites and authority sites can be helpful if you’re trying to clarify this issue.
When you choose either a mini site or an authority site, you are casting your marketing net to capture a particular type of audience. In some cases, the two can be similar, though the scale will be different.
If you’re targeting a large market and you want to promote many diverse products, you would want to set up an authority site. If you are using the minisite model, then that would only allow you to target one particular product within the larger market. Which approach you decide is entirely up to you, and there are many reasons why you would want to choose one over the other. It’s generally understood by many Internet marketers that there are plenty of good reasons to create authority websites. It just seems to be the trend that is being forced by Google. But there are also plenty of other benefits for the bigger sites with regards to marketing as well as SEO. The larger sites allow more scope for creating backlinks, which makes it easier to rank well. Also think that you will eventually get voluntarily backlinked “to” by other sites if you have a good authority site.
Another advantage with authority sites is the ability to rank for various other keyword phrases. It’s very possible that your site will start ranking for keywords that are synonyms of your chosen keywords. You can then exploit those new key-phrases to improve your rankings even further. Analyze the stats for those synonyms, but also try to determine whether you can expand on them to create other keyword phrases to help your rankings. Many established websites will find this happening to their own rankings over time. However, this phenomenon does take time to appear. Because all your marketing ventures are unique, it’s important to consider them all separately. Each business you have has unique characteristics that involve the entire spectrum ranging from marketing/advertising considerations to your own personal interests. With this in mind it would be completely unwise to imply that either authority or min sites were superior to the other.
