Surviving Your First Night In Minecraft
Minecraft would definitely suit being ported and added to the Nintendo 3DS repertoire (but probably not really for the Xbox Kinect). Starting out on Normal mode, however (and you will be, because Peaceful mode is for pansies), a few pointers would not go amiss; you don’t want to fall victim to any unfortunate and avoidable accidents. So get comfortable, keep some torches handy and be prepared to follow the advice of our good friends the dwarves: strike the earth (as previously mentioned, perhaps not best done with a Kinect; can you say RSI?)!
Firstly, note where you appear when you begin your first world. Meet your spawn point. If you get the materials you’ll be able to make yourself a compass, which will lead you back here if you happen to get lost (this is quite easy to do if you stray too far). This is where you return to if you get killed (and also helps you calculate the distance you’ll have to run in order to frantically recollect your items before they despawn).
Getting your hands on some wood (see what I did there?) should be the first thing you do. Bash in a tree trunk until you’ve demolished the entire thing (the leaves will disappear of their own accord, leaving saplings behind), make these into planks and then craft a workbench (this made from four wooden planks). Use the rest of the planks to make additional tools such as axes (for more efficient tree chopping) and picks (faster mining). Cobblestone, coal and iron should be your next port of call; combine planks and coal to make torches to keep the oncoming darkness away. However, whether you find the resources you need any time soon is entirely a matter of chance.
By night time you need somewhere to hide out safely. Be it a hole in the ground or a fancy tree house, just make sure you have somewhere safe and inaccessible. You really don’t want a creeper to the face, after all.
