Legal question – Does one need a license to make & sell movie prop replicas?
I would like to make my own replicas of movie props and sell them on the internet.
What are my legal obligations or requirements if any?
There are two aspects of your problem – copyright and trademark.
Almost everything in a movie is covered by copyright just by being made so you can’t escape that if you make a copy, but if you are inspired by the design and make larger, smaller, different colors, etc., you may have a defense if they come after you.
Important symbolic stuff in movies is almost always trademarked so that it can be sold as miniatures and souvenirs (like at a theme park) and making variations on those is a lot tougher since the impression of the mark does not depend on size, etc.
You would be better off, since you are taking someone’s design, which obviously has value because you want to make money off it, to contact the production company, describe exactly what you want to do, and see what they will do. If you surprise them as they had not thought is was a market, you might get it for a royalty and not have to pay an upfront fee.
