Affordable Alternatives To The Aimpoint Red Dot Sights
Whilst Aimpoint and Eotech dominate the high end of the red dot sight spectrum, their sights command premium prices which not everyone can pay. There are a lot of reasons why a shooter would want a less expensive, but rugged and effective red dot sight. However, inexpensive red dot sights are more often than not pure junk. It is possible to get a perfectly acceptable alternative to an Aimpoint, albeit one that will use a lot more batteries, for a third or less of what the Aimpoint would cost you.
The Vortex Strikefire is a 30mm body 4 MoA red dot sight that is clearly an alternative to the Aimpoint CompM2 and CompM3 (it has an NV setting that the CompML2 and CompML3 lack). The Strikefire comes complete with a mount for Weaver and Picatinny rails and bases. They thoughtfully provide a tactical version which is red dot only and has a mount that is the right height for a flat-top AR-15 whereas the hunting version has both red and green dots and has a lower mount suited to the scope height on hunting rifles and shotguns. Both versions come with a 2X magnifier to increase their versatility.
The Vortex SPARC is their competitor to the Aimpoint T-1 and provides a very credible alternative at much lower price. The sight comes with a Picatinny/Weaver mount and adapters to enable co-witnessing at your chosen height. The sight is compatible with La Rue LT660 mounts which are also available in various heights providing a quick detach option. As with the Strikefire there is a single night vision setting. Vortex sights are tested to 1000 rounds of .375″ H&H magnum and are O-ring sealed, nitrogen purged and water, fog and shock proof. As with Aimpoints, Vortex red dots are parallax free beyond 50 yards.
The Bushnell Trophy red dot sight looks like an ACOG and has a back-up open sight set up on top. However, it uses a dot in the middle of a T reticle which makes it easy to level the weapon and sweep arrays of horizontal targets. This is an ideal sight for 3 gun competition shooting and metallic silhouettes. Repeatability is ensured by the integral twin thumbscrew mount. The Bushnell Trophy red dot is a very real alternative to the Aimpoints offering easy to use controls and great precision for a red dot sight.

We Are Pilots $6.99 There’s something so apt about the band name chosen by Chad Petree and his Shiny Toy Guns playmates. Synth-driven, bright, and relentlessly safe, the plastic pop sound on We Are Pilots references the ’80s even more explicitly than the Duran Duran-loving Killers. But despite the occasional chirpy electro (most directly referenced in “Le Disko”) and the Human League makeup it’s intensely modern, clo… |

Rifle Marksmanship $31.9 All Marines share a common warfighting belief: "Every Marine a rifleman." This simple credo reinforces the belief that all Marines are forged from a common experience, share a common set of values, and are trained as members of an expeditionary force in readiness. As such, there are no "rear area" Marines, and no one is very far from the fighting during expeditionary operations. The Marine rifleman of the next conflict will be as in past conflicts: among the first to confront the enemy and the last to hang his weapon in the rack after the conflict is won. Rifle Marksmanship, a Marine Corps Reference Publication, provides techniques and procedures for Marine Corps rifle marksmanship. Every Marine is first and foremost a rifleman. Rifle Marksmanship reflects this ethos and the Marine Corps’ warfighting philosophy. This publication discusses the individual skills required for effective rifle marksmanship and standardizes the techniques and procedures used throughout the Marine Corps. It constitutes the doctrinal basis for all entry-level and sustainment-level rifle marksmanship training. |

American Rifle $15.99 George Washington insisted that his portrait be painted with one. Daniel Boone created a legend with one. Abraham Lincoln shot them on the White House lawn. And Teddy Roosevelt had his specially customized. Now, in this first-of-its-kind book, historian Alexander Rose delivers a colorful, engrossing biography of an American icon: the rifle. Drawing on the words of soldiers, inventors, and presidents, based on extensive new research, and encompassing the Revolution to the present day, American Rifle is a balanced, wonderfully entertaining history of this most essential firearm and its place in American culture. In the eighteenth century American soldiers discovered that they no longer had to fight in Europe’s time-honored way. With the evolution of the famed “Kentucky” Rifle—a weapon slow to load but devastatingly accurate in the hands of a master—a new era of warfare dawned, heralding the birth of the American individualist in battle. In this spirited narrative, Alexander Rose reveals the hidden connections between the rifle’s development and our nation’s history. We witness the high-stakes international competition to produce the most potent gunpowder . . . how the mysterious arts of metallurgy, gunsmithing, and mass production played vital roles in the creation of American economic supremacy . . . and the ways in which bitter infighting between rival arms makers shaped diplomacy and influenced the most momentous decisions in American history. And we learn why advances in rifle technology and ammunition triggered revolutions in military tactics, how ballistics tests—frequently bizarre—were secretly conducted, and which firearms determined the course of entire wars. From physics to geopolitics, from frontiersmen to the birth of the National Rifle Association, from the battles of the Revolution to the war in Iraq, American Rifle is a must read for history buffs, gun collectors, soldiers—and anyone who seeks to understand the dynamic relationship between the rifle and this nation’s history. From the Hardcover edition. |
