Rookie Starting
What is the definition of a ‘skilled position’ in the NFL and are they less likely to start as rookie’s?
First, could I get a position specific breakdown of what qualifies as a “skills position” in the NFL? Obviously QB, WR’s, RB’s, but what about CB’s and Safety’s?
Second, regarding rookie starts out of the draft, would I be correct in assuming that there is a greater liklihood of non skilled positions becoming starters quicker and more often? In other words, I’m guessing that a Defensive Lineman drafted in round 2 historically has a better chance of immediately starting than a WR or even a Corner back that was also drafted in round 2. Is that correct? If so, how much of a differential margin is there?
Skilled positions simply refer to eligible receivers. Its a term that is incorrectly used and doesn’t really describe anything, but there is your clarification.
Likelyhood of starting is really quite relative. Reggie Bush was worked in slowly his first year as a Saint, Joe Thomas was starting at tackle right away. On the flip side, Glenn Dorsey was worked in slowly this year because he missed so much training camp and Desean Jackson was starting for the Eagles at wideout.
Typically, the speed in which they are incorporated has to do with their role and skill set. A nose tackle or a pass rushing outside linebacker in a 3-4 would get in quicker then a defensive end in a tampa 2 or an offensive tackle in a zone blocking scheme.
