WWII in Color: The British Story - $17.99 Includes:WWII in Color: The British Story – Beginning of the End (2000) WWII in Color: The British Story – Darkest Hour (2000) WWII in Color: The British Story – Unknown Warriors (2000) WWII in Color: The British Story – Beginning of the End This tape covers part of the British experience of World War II as seen by those on the home front. In this episode, Britain is “invaded” by thousands of American troops in preparation for the eventual invasion of Europe. Footage of that invasion is included as well as graphic footage from other fronts that clearly illuminates the human cost of Britain’s war. The program is narrated by John Thaw of Inspector Morse fame. ~ Rob Ferrier, Rovi WWII in Color: The British Story – Darkest Hour This documentary covers the first four years of World War II from the British perspective, a time when Britain stood largely alone among the countries of Europe and absorbed defeat after thundering defeat. Concentrating on the war as experienced by the home front, this tape investigates how a society still deeply divided by class nevertheless pulled together to endure one of history’s darkest hours. This program is narrated by John Thaw of Inspector Morse fame. ~ Rob Ferrier, Rovi WWII in Color: The British Story – Unknown Warriors This tape introduces some of the British soldiers, sailors, airmen, and civilians whose battles and struggles were profiled in the other episodes of World War II: The British Story. WWII Crimes on British Homefront $29.98 In this 7-part documentary, award-winning director Peter Williams (Secret Army ) unearths the stories of people in wartime Britain who got away with everything from murder to looting, theft, profiteering and espionage. The German Luftwaffe blasted the buildings of Britain’s cities into rubble, creating an ideal hiding place for homicide victims among the many genuine victims of the blitz. Rationing was established to manage the nation’s consumption of food, goods and fuel, but scarcity drove many law-abiding citizens to the black market. Seen through archival footage and interviews with people who were there, WWII Crimes on the British Home Front is an important, riveting record of wartime crime and human ingenuity. Includes: Getting Away with Murder / Innocence and Guilt / How young Jim set out to kill Hitler… / Cops and Robbers / Rubble, Trouble and Death / Country Bobby / Mayhem and Memories (2 DVD) approx. 168 mins. |

WWII in Color/WWII in Color: The British Story [2 Discs] - $14.99 Includes:WWII in Color (1998) WWII in Color: The British Story – Unknown Warriors (2000) WWII in Color: The British Story – Beginning of the End (2000) WWII in Color: The British Story – Darkest Hour (2000) WWII in Color Retrieved color footage shot during World War II by soldiers and eyewitnesses brings a seemingly distant war to new life in this documentary of American involvement overseas. The filmmakers have chosen action sequences over analysis or historical context, and they focus on the Pacific theater of operations — including Jimmy Doolittle’s 1942 surprise attack on Tokyo and the Marines’ engagement in important strategic conflicts on Tarawa. Sometimes quite graphic and sometimes austere, the scenes range from battles and bombing raids to the jubilation of liberated Europeans and Hitler’s home videos of Eva Braun. A unique and surprisingly fresh addition to the library of any military history buff. ~ Sarah Welsh, Rovi WWII in Color: The British Story – Unknown Warriors This tape introduces some of the British soldiers, sailors, airmen, and civilians whose battles and struggles were profiled in the other episodes of World War II: The British Story. Included in the interviews are short talks with some of the surviving soldiers depicted in newsreel footage, as well as the cameraman who shot that footage. WWII STRATEGIES - $14.99 Includes:Target for Tonight (1941) The True Glory (1945) Target for Tonight Target for Tonight is another first-rate wartime documentary drama from the prolific writer-director Harry Watt, the onetime Robert Flaherty assistant whose talents truly blossomed under the guidance of master propagandist John Grierson. This 48-minute film details the experiences of a single Royal Air Force bomber and its courageous crew, all played by actual members of the RAF. After guiding the viewer through the various ground-crew stations, strategy centers and map rooms, director Watt enters the bomber itself as the crew gears itself for another mission over Germany-one which ends almost before it begins when the plane is hit with machine-gun flack (a truly frightening sequence). Though the screenplay is obviously a composite of several missions, the film’s irrefutable authenticity is stamped on every frame. Target for Tonight was not only the film that “made” Harry Watt’s reputation, but it also served as the prototype for all the British WW2 “semi-documentaries” to come. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi The True Glory British filmmaker Carol Reed and American playwright Garson Kanin team up to direct the war documentary The True Glory. The movie was assembled from actual footage of the WWII allied invasion of Europe, captured by thousands of different camera operators. Starting with D-Day, the documentary covers the major battles all the way to the fall of Berlin, along with personal vignettes. The prologue is read by General Dwight D. Eisenhower, with Robert Harris and Peter Ustinov providing narration. The True Glory won an Academy award for Best Documentary in 1945. ~ Andrea LeVasseur, Rovi |

How to Lose WWII $9.99 An engrossing and fact-filled collection of the great screwups of the Great War Never had there been a war on the scale of World War II—a global conflict so widespread and involving so many different military organizations from such a diverse pool of combatant countries that the consequences of every decision, both the brilliant and the bad, were multiplied one hundredfold. Bill Fawcett, popular chronicler of monumental military mistakes and truly boneheaded battlefield blunders now looks closely at the historic errors that ultimately determined the course of post-WWII history. A cornucopia of catastrophic missteps, including: An unprepared Poland is caught napping as the Nazis storm in virtually unopposed Germany misses a golden opportunity to take Britain out of the war at Dunkirk Russia plays Goliath to Finland’s David Four valuable months are wasted as Allied forces sit trapped on the beaches of Anzio Germany squanders its costly development of jet power The secret 1942 battle Marshal Zhukov lost, along with half a million soldiers Battles lost that should have been won, including Moscow, Stalingrad, and D-Day |
