GRAVITY SUCKS – SPACE PENS DON’T
Most of us have heard the legend about how the American and Soviet engineers faced a design challenge during the space race of the sixties. They needed to come up with something that could write in the zero-gravity capsule. The story tells of how NASA engineers spent millions of dollars developing an ‘Astronaut Pen’ whilst the Soviets allowed logic to prevail and used the humble pencil.
Now why spoil a good story with the truth? While the story is pure fiction, the fact is that writing instruments are indispensable in daily life – even in space.
According to legend busting website, Snopes.com. the Americans and the Russians both used pencils but found tht the broken leads were a safety hazard as they floated around the capsule.
Paul Fisher, who founded the Fisher pen company was an engineer and he realised that the space programme could do with something far safer and which was able to work under extreme temperature variations. It took him 24 months and over a million dollars before he was able to produce his first metal pressurised ball pen.In 1965, he sent some samples to NASA at the Houston Space Centre where they were tested thoroughly.
And Fisher’s space pens have been used on all manned space flights – both US and Russian – ever since then.On top of it all, the government didn’t pay any development costs – Fisher paid for everything. What he did do however, was sell 400 Fisher Space Pens to NASA for $2.95 each !
From astronauts to ordinary men and women, we all need pens. Despite the massive growth of the internet and mobile communications, we still need pens to make notes, scribble down an address or phone number, sign documents, edit copy, fill in forms, sign credit card slips… the uses are endless. And anyone in the service industry who needs a pen for their job will undoubtedly complain that their pens always go missing! Bank tellers, secretaries, shop assistants, couriers etc are all plagued with disappearing pens. There’s no getting away from it – pens are functional and desirable.
And that’s why millions of organisations use promotional pens to market their products and services. There are a myriad types of promotional pens, from roller balls and ballpens, markers and highlighters, cheap plastic throwaways to bespoke handmade masterpieces, stylus pens and novely items.
These can be imprinted with an organisation’s logo or strapline etc.Branded packing for promotional pens can also be manufactured, adding even greater appeal.
The pens of today are a far cry from the days of Ancient Egypt 3000 years ago, where hollow reeds containing pigment were first used. Could a scribe, taking a break from painting hieroglyphics, have ever looked up to the heavens and imagined that it was possible for humans to go that far ? And that the crude writing instrument that he held in his hand was the forerunner of one of the most basic yet essential tools of daily life ?
There’s no doubt that we can’t live without pens, which is why promotional pens are the ‘go to’ item that millions of organisations choose to advertise their product or service.

Brak Presents The Brak Album Starring Brak $13.96 In the sometimes-twisted world of cartoons, Brak seems to fall someplace between Ren & Stimpy and South Park. Not quite as gross as the former and nowhere near as foul-mouthed as the latter, Valdemar H. Guerta (a.k.a. Brak) climbed to stardom on the back–or slippery ether–of his costar Space Ghost. Now the Brakster has gathered some truly unusual (and unexpected) guests for his first album. Like… |

Space Ghost’s Musical Bar-B-Que: Featuring 25 Hickory-Smoked Harmonies (Television Soundtrack) $13.98 Originally a Hanna-Barbera superhero designed by comic artist Alex Toth in the 1960s, Space Ghost was revived by the Cartoon Network as a surreal, self-involved talk-show host in 1994. Space Ghost Coast to Coast – Volume One $9.93 What would Late Night be like if David Letterman was replaced by a superhero? That’s the question posited by the Cartoon Network’s original series Space Ghost Coast to Coast, and the answer is: truly odd and frequently hilarious. Whale Talk $3.95 There’ s bad news and good news about the Cutter High School swim team. The bad news is that they don’ t have a pool. The good news is that only one of them can swim anyway. A group of misfits brought together by T. J. Jones (the J is redundant), the Cutter All Night Mermen struggle to find their places in a school that has no place for them. T.J. is convinced that a varsity letter jacket- exclusive, revered, the symbol (as far as T.J. is concerned) of all that is screwed up at Cutter High- will also be an effective tool. He’ s right. He’ s also wrong. Still, it’ s always the quest that counts. And the bus on which the Mermen travel to swim meets soon becomes the space where they gradually allow themselves to talk, to fit, to grow. Together they’ ll fight for dignity in a world where tragedy and comedy dance side by side, where a moment’ s inattention can bring lifelong heartache, and where true acceptance is the only prescription for what ails us. |

Surgical Talk $39 As finals approach, medical students often become overwhelmed by the sheer volume of knowledge required to pass all subjects in one go, including surgery, medicine, obstetrics and gynaecology, pharmacology and psychiatry. Clearly the students cannot know each of these subjects in as much detail as they did during their individual attachments and they need to concentrate on important topics rather than minutiae. Whereas existing textbooks cover many topics very well and in great detail, they are lengthy and difficult to read in a short space of time; also some subjects are poorly covered and give no real understanding of practical management and logical thought processes – the exact requirements for passing finals. |

Beauty Talk & Monsters $3.94 Masha Tupitsyn’s "Beauty Talk & Monsters" is a debut collection of stories as told through the movies. Equally influenced by Brian De Palma and Kathy Acker, Tupitsyn revisits the ruins of a childhood and youth nurtured on the fringe of the glittering lower Manhattan art world and the Atlantic haven of Provincetown in the 1980s. Moving fluidly through space, time, and a range of cinematic frameworks, Tupitsyn cuts through the cynical glamour and illusion of Hollywood to a soft, secret heart. Her narrator, a female loner and traveler, is caught in the maelstrom of films and images, where life is experienced through the eye of a camera lens and seen through the light on the screen. In a precise and elegant style, "Beauty Talk & Monsters" embraces and confronts a lineage of familiar myths and on- and off-screen cinematic excess in order to challenge the silver screen’s century of power over our dreams and ideals. Intimate and intellectual, Tupitsyn’s stories play with the cinema’s most popular icons and images. |

Talk Yuh Talk Talk Yuh Talk: Interviews with Anglophone Caribbean Poets Interviews with Anglophone Caribbean Poets $27.5 Before the Caribbean-inflected spoken-word poetry of the 1990s, epitomized by poetry slams at the Nuyorican Poets CafA(c) in Manhattan, there was reggae. In the past thirty years, most Caribbean poetry written in English has come to the shores of the United States on waves of music, in the lyrics of Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, and Burning Spear. Kwame Dawes, himself a musician and poet, is not surprised by this phenomenon. The region’s political and cultural awakening of the 1970s was fueled by a growing African consciousness, often in competition with the multiple traditions–European, Indian, Chinese–that have permeated many Caribbean nations for centuries. The influence of reggae has produced a poetry that is quite different from earlier work from the Caribbean, but this is only one more chapter in a tradition characterized by continuing tension with a diverse heritage. The interviews in Talk Yuh Talk reflect a range of Caribbean voices from several generations, from those poets influenced by a dynamic interplay between the popular culture of reggae, calypso, folk music, and "yard" theater to those whose work is closer to classical forms of literature and oral narrative. Kwame Dawes talks with many of the most important poets to have emerged from the Caribbean who are still writing today. The poets discuss their techniques, their situations as poets, and the challenges they face in the profession and in their craft. Well-known figures like Lorna Goodison, Grace Nichols, Kamau Brathwaite, Fred D’Aguiar, and Martin Carter share space with such lesser-known but equally important poets as Mervyn Morris and Kendel Hippolyte. In a specific introduction to each poet, Dawes offers a sense of what is important or meaningful about the poet’s work. He explores detachment with Mervyn Morris, intellectual rigor with David Dabydeen, the struggles of obscurity with Cyril Dabydeen, the poetics of surprise and the erotic with Grace Nichols, the reggae escape motif with Lillian Allen, ambivalence about Africa with James Berry, and more, talking with eighteen poets in all. By allowing them to speak in their own voices and by directing the questions along the lines of creative process and aesthetics, Dawes makes a compelling case for the strength of Caribbean poetry while offering a lively source of inspiration and information for practicing poets as well as critics. |
