If adventure is what you seek, then check out holidays in Yukon, they are stunning and energetic. The Yukon River’s name actually means Great River, this where the place Yukon received it’s name. Yukon is famous for many different reasons, but the one thing it is known world-wide for is the Klondike Gold Rush. Canadian holidays have benefited in a massive way thanks to Yukon’s diverse history and activities.
The Klondike Gold Rush really kicked off in the 19th century. Rumours started to circulate that there was gold to be found down the Klondike highway and in the streams and rivers. Thousands of people started to flood to this area in hopes of becoming rich beyond their wildest dreams. With so many people flocking to this one area, looking for good, in 1897 it was decided that a police force was needed to bring peace and order to the situation.
The NWMP or the North West Mountain Police was created to help bring order to the Gold Rush situation. Better known as the Mounties, a man called “Constantine” was there leader, the Canadian government employed him to look after the Gold Rush and asked him to keep things in order. With many duties the Mounties established a strong force and a strong name for themselves. The Mounties did keep order very well, they were however known for allowing illegal activities to continue, examples like gambling and prostitution.
Today the Mounties are still a well established force and respected throughout Canada, they are very much a large piece of Canada’s history. “We always catch our man”, this was the Motto that the Mounties were very famous for, they were well known for being able to catch anyone they hunted.
Yukon’s tourism is one of its biggest money spinners and has 100’s of activities ranging from canoeing and kayaking, to skiing and snowboarding. So go to Yukon and see if you can find some gold, there is a fantastic Alaska cruise that travels from Yukon through Alaska.
