Understanding The Work Of The Forensic Dentist
Forensic dentistry is the proper handling, examination and evaluation of dental evidence. From an examination of the teeth, the age of a child may be found, and the identity of the person to whom the teeth belong. Dental records and post mortem photographs taken by the forensic dentist are used to determine the identity. The other type of evidence that is used are bite marks that are found on the victim by the attacker, the perpetrator from the victim of the attack or on an object found at the crime scene.
Teeth are very reliable tools for identification because teeth are so resilient. The enamel of the tooth is the hardest substance in the body making it able to withstand, water, fire, and outdoor elements.

In some cases the body might be severely burned or even decaying and so the only identifiable part of the body would be the teeth. What the forensic dentist would do is to try to make a match between the found set of teeth and the dental records. He would look at the size of the teeth, the space between each tooth, and the rotations. Furthermore, information regarding the circumstances of how the person died might also be incurred out of these dental investigations.
Where the dental records are not available, and there is no clue as to the identity of the deceased, an after death record (post mortem) of the teeth is completed. This gives an idea of some of the characteristics of the dead person to help narrow down the search for the identity of that person.
However not all dental procedures can be relied upon a hundred percent all of the time. One of these is the bite mark analysis or testing. The reason behind this is that the dental profiles of individual can and may change through the years. This can be brought about by dental accidents, by missing teeth, and other imperfections. On the other hand, if the victim of physical abuse can quickly subject himself to bite mark analysis then there is still a good chance that proper identification of the criminal can be made.
