Why did the first Spider-Woman have such a cluttered and convoluted origin story?

Back in the day, when comic characters were created, there were frequently multiple artists writing the character, each adding different parts to it. Spider-woman seems to have been created with nothing more than the mandate to make a female Spider-Man, and so pesky little details like “origins” were made up on the fly. Today, Jessica Drew seems to have been given the attention she deserves, and has an origin that seems to make some sort of sense.
