Star Wars Original Series Question?
In Star Wars A New Hope, when the x-wings and y-wings go on their attack runs for the generator, why are they in trios? Why not have one go in and the other two fly overhead to protect against Tie Fighters? It just doesnt make sense, since they all get shot down easily (with the exception of Wedge)
First you must take into consideration what that scene was depicting. The Empire had constructed a space station so large that it could easily be mistaken for a small moon, and it had the destructive power to wipe out an entire planet. Such a large and powerful station as the Death Star easily had enough starfighters to outnumber and overwhelm the rebels many times over. The Death Star carried 100 wings of TIE Fighters (which is 7200 total starfighters), and scrambled enough enemy fighters to handle the rebel squadrons “ship by ship”.
The fighter squadrons that the Rebels launched at the Death Star were tasked with disarming the weapons emplacements guarding the trench they were attacking and keeping the enemy fighters off of their comrades while they were making their runs. For the trench runs each pilot was accompanied by two wing-mates, the wing-mates were there to help cover the leader who was making the attack run on the trench and help destroy weapon’s emplacements. In addition in the event that something were to happen to one or both of the other ships each starfighter had its own proton torpedoes and could complete the run individually if given the chance.
You are correct that all ships were shot down with the exception of Luke, Wedge, and of course Han and Chewie in the Millennium Falcon, however the other ships were not shot down “easily”. Darth Vader was one of the greatest pilots in the galaxy and so he made it LOOK easy however the Rebel pilots were very skilled or else they never would have survived as long as they did given that they actually ATTACKED the Death Star, and given how grossly overmatched they were.
So every fighter had two wing-mates, the wing-mates providing protection and, in the event of death of a companion they picked up the attack in their stead. They were sitting ducks for the most part with regards to enemy starfighters but it was the job of the rest of the Rebel squadrons to keep enemy fighters off of the trio making the trench runs.
When it came down to Luke, Wedge and Biggs being the final three Rebel fighters left Biggs and Wedge were the only ones who could protect Luke from the enemy fighters while Luke focused on the target. With Biggs getting shot down Luke told Wedge to get clear, thereby saving his only remaining friend from the certain death that awaited him in the trench.
In short they flew in trios at first because there were other squadrons of starfighters to keep the enemy TIE fighters off of them, and three ships making the run were tactically smarter than just going one at a time, as the one ship would much more easily be destroyed.
You also said “why not have one go in and the other two fly overhead to protect against TIE Fighters?” Well this is exactly what Luke, Wedge and Biggs did when they were the only ones left. Wedge and Biggs protecting against enemy fighters while Luke was the one to go in.
