Vinyl Art

What is all the hype with Vinyl art toys?
I don’t get it. $100 for a little vinyl toy? It’s not even a toy..toys are fun it’s a dust collector. Even Disney is in on it now. Can someone please explain? Is it like beenie babies?
They’re $10, not $100.
They’re little ugly vinyl dolls that are part of a series, each series has a different theme… worst part is, when you buy them, it’s blind… you have no idea what you might get in a box other than it’s from that series. But you can trade them in at the counter with a few others they have on display, or I guess trade with other collectores.
But I know… I don’t care for them much.
My son loves them though and always spends his Disney allowance on them now.
I figure, though, since they are new, some of the ones coming out these first few years are probably going to be worth a lot of money some day… like some of the original Disney pins… so I told him if that’s what he wants to spend his money on, fine, but he has to take good care of them.

The Record: Contemporary ART and VINYL $32.99 "The Record" is the full-color catalog accompanying the groundbreaking exhibition "The Record: Contemporary Art and Vinyl," at the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University from September 2, 2010 through February 6, 2011. The first exhibition to explore the culture of vinyl records in the history of contemporary art, "The Record" features rarely exhibited work and recent and newly commissioned pieces by thirty-three artists from around the world. These artists have taken vinyl records as their subject or medium, producing sound work, sculpture, installation, drawing, painting, photography, video, and performance. Works by well-known artists such as Laurie Anderson, Jasper Johns, Ed Ruscha, and Carrie Mae Weems appear alongside those of other North American artists, and of artists from Africa, Asia, Europe, and Latin America, some of whom have never before exhibited in a U.S. museum. Among the works shown are David Byrne’s original Polaroid photomontage used for the cover of the 1978 Talking Heads album "More Songs about Buildings and Food," the fictive soul "album covers" created by the outsider artist Mingering Mike in the late 1960s and early 1970s, and "Wheel of Steel" (2006), an arresting narrative of record-playing told through digital photos by the South African-born and Berlin-based artist Robin Rhode. In addition to the 225 images, 200 of which appear in color, the catalog includes personal reflections and critical analyses. All of the artists in the exhibition contribute personal statements about their work in relation to the vinyl record, and critics and scholars explore the historical impact of the record on art and music and the ways the medium has helped shape individual and collective identities." For the Love of Vinyl: The Album Art of Hipgnosis $38.53 Hipgnosis was the biggest and best graphic design firm for the biggest and best bands of the 60s and 70s. Formed by Storm Thorgerson and Aubrey Powell in London in 1968 (with the addition of Throbbing Gristle’s Peter Christopherson in 1974), Hipgnosis specialized in creative photography for the music business, making classic album covers for bands and musicians like Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Electric Light Orchestra, Genesis, 10cc, Yes, Peter Gabriel, The Gods, Black Sabbath, Rainbow, Paul McCartney, Syd Barrett, Scorpions and Styx, among others. Over the course of its 15 year existence, Hipgnosis produced timeless rock iconography–everybody knows at least one Hipgnosis cover, thanks to Pink Floyd’s "Dark Side of the Moon," The firm’s inventive takes on the themes or titles of any given album opened up a new visual language in album cover art, one in which theatrical tableaux, trick photography and logo design played notable roles. "For the Love of Vinyl" is the first book to survey Storm and Powell’s output in detail, focusing on more than 60 package designs–from cover to label–described with entertaining detail by the team who created them. Also included are short essays by musicians (such as Pink Floyd’s Nick Mason and artists (British Pop artist Peter Blake) and fellow designers (Paula Scher) on their favorite Hipgnosis covers, as well as previously unseen photographs and ephemera. Complementing all this material is a lengthy critical-historical text examining Hipgnosis and its legacy. "For the Love of Vinyl" is "the" rock book of 2008. Storm Thorgerson and Aubrey Powell are award-winning graphic designers and the founders of Hipgnosis. |

Celebrity Vinyl $16.11 "Celebrity Vinyl" is a laugh-riot reminder of what happens when famous people decide to (unsuccessfully) give singing a try. The number of celebrities, and pseudo-celebrities, that have indulged such hubris boggles the mind: Burt Reynolds, Shaquille O’Neal, John Travolta, Eddie Murphy, Leonard Nimoy, Alyssa Milano – the list goes on and on, as do the laughs. Over 100 photographs of the album art that houses these celebrity recordings are paired with gut-punch funny captions. The collection started when the advertising agency that author Tom Hamling worked in elected to transfer its audio library to CDs. Since then, he has spent close to a decade acquiring celebrity vinyl, rooting through record store bins and traveling to far-flung flea markets. Hamling says of his ongoing quest to collect these curiously compelling objects, "Sometimes I feel like Dr. Richard Kimble in search of the one-armed man. Except my one-armed man is the inaudible shriek of Jennifer Love Hewitt." "Celebrity Vinyl" is a pop-culture microscope that reveals the nuances and blemishes of vinyl and celebrity cultures from a bygone era. Every example is accompanied by riotously hilarious captions that dissect the album’s artwork and graphic design, as well as the celebrity in question. |
