Built by slaves, soldiers along with convicts from Cuba in the eighteenth century, Fort Matanzas served as a commanding site for the Spanish, who were wanting to retain control over Florida. The shellstone structure remains even today and is an American National Monument, the other in St. Augustine being Castillo de San Marcos. Constructed in Spanish-occupied Florida in the 17th century, this fort is not just one of the country’s oldest forts, but it is also widely perceived as a spot of paranormal activity. The phenomena that have been noticed and experienced here consist of apparitions and shadow figures as well as strange sounds.
