Magpul M-16 Fore Grips
Since the turn of the century, fore grips have made a huge comeback with the world’s militaries. They had generally fallen out of favour in the early 1940s with a few exceptions; for example Romanian and Hungarian AKs. What brought fore grips back was the greater control they offer. This is vital in CQB when house clearing, but is not the only advantage. Fore grips are less tiring to hold than horizontal fore ends and help manipulate the weapon in close combat. They also protect the hand from very hot fore-ends. Fast follow-up shots are enabled and the fore grips generally make it easier to incorporate flashlight or laser controls.
Troy manufacture some of the best thought out, best engineered weapon accessories on the market. The Troy Combat Grip is no exception. The alumnium grip is immensely strong and chequered bands offer a great gripping surface in slippery conditions. The fore grip is Type III hard anodized in either black or matte earth. The grip can be assembled in full length or ‘stubby’ format and includes a dry storage compartment for batteries and other small items. The Troy Combat Grip clamps to the rail ultra-securely with a stainless steel cross bolt and is held in place with a full length locking bar and rear cross bars. The Troy is a high quality product but not cheap and problematic to touch in very hot or very cold temperatures.
Magpul offer less expensive, but well thought out alternatives to the Troy Combat Grip in their MVG and RVG grips. Black, OD green, foliage green and dark earth versions of this tough, chemical and rust resistant polymer grip are offered.. In contrast to the Troy, the Magpul RVG and MVG more rectangular in cross section, optimized for the ‘thumb break’ hold with grooves on the front and back and stippled side panels. Rather than fitting a standard rail, Magpul’s MVG (MOE Vertical Grip) fits their proprietary MOE fore end or that of Bushmaster’s ACR ‘Adaptive Combat Rifle’. The Magpul RVG or Rail Vertical Grip is the same but attaches to any MIL-STD 1913 Picatinny rail.
Not everyone shares the assumption that vertical is the way to go. Magpul have always emphasized superior ergonomics in their products and the Magpul AFG Angled Fore Grip offers a different and very well designed alternative to vertical grips. The Magpul VFG is angled to offer a more natural hold which is less fatiguing than any vertical grip, supporting the weapon with the upturned palm of the hand with the thumb following the line of the barrel. This puts the hand close to the line of recoil offering superior control and is less likely to trap the hand against an obstruction. Two models are offered. The original Magpul VFG 1 has been supplemented by the smaller, narrower Magpul VFG 2 which is suited to weapons where fore end rail space is limited. These grips can be used on AKs without obstructing magazine changes. The Magpul grips have the additional advantage of being light.
