Questions Raised About Richard Blumenthal Vietnam Service
A recent question about Richard Blumenthal’s Vietnam service has practically imploded the Connecticut Senate race. For the last few months, Richard Blumenthal, a Democrat, has been the front runner of the race. Blumenthal’s opponent, Linda McMahon, is the former CEO of World Wresting Entertainment and has given her campaign 14 million dollars in no fax cash advance funding. Blumenthal’s Vietnam claims
The Blumenthal Vietnam statements may be contradictory, as discussed by the New York Times. Though he served in the Marine Reserves in the 1970s, Richard Blumenthal was never stationed in Vietnam. There are multiple speeches and statements at issue. The two that best exemplify this Blumenthal Vietnam dichotomy are:
“We have learned something important since the days that I served in Vietnam.”
Then, he said:
“Although I did not serve in Vietnam, I have seen firsthand the effects of military action, and no one wants it to be the first resort…”
How McMahon’s campaign is connected to Blumenthal Vietnam story
The Blumenthal Vietnam story has been, very unusually, claimed by the McMahon campaign. Linda McMahon has been behind Blumenthal in the polls since the Connecticut senate race started. At the same time, her campaign has been gaining ground in the last few months. The official McMahon campaign has said that the Blumenthal Vietnam story comes from saying “This is what comes of $ 16 million, a crack opposition research …” The $ 16 million figure is unprecedented in the amount of cash spent to discredit a Senate campaign candidate.
How Blumenthal has reacted to Vietnam accusations
The Blumenthal Vietnam questions have led to the Blumenthal campaign releasing strongly-worded statements. The Communications Director for the campaign said “It’s no surprise Republicans would want to smear the Attorney General, considering all of the debauchery at the WWF under Linda McMahon’s watch,” while the Campaign Manager took a less slanderous approach by saying “Unlike many of his peers, Dick Blumenthal voluntarily joined the Marine Corps Reserves in 1970 and served for six months in Parris Island, S.C., and six years in the reserves. He received no special treatment from anyone. Dick has a long record of standing up for veterans.”
